The Festival

What It Is

A Viking Age Cultural Festival

Florida Viking Fest is a multi-day living history festival centered on Viking Age culture: Norse combat, craft, music, storytelling, and education.

The festival is designed to operate as a partnership between the Education Foundation of Lake County (nonprofit operator), participating organizations (combat schools, artisan guilds, living history societies), and community vendors, creating a revenue model that funds educational programming alongside the event itself.

The Format

A Mobile Encampment. Not a Fixed Fairground.

Florida Viking Fest is structured as a mobile encampment, not a fixed installation. Each of the six zones is a self-contained camp that can be established at any compatible venue with 3–8 acres of usable space. No permanent infrastructure required.

This is authentic to the culture. Viking-era society was built on mobility: trade routes, seasonal encampments, ships that carried entire communities. FVF's format reflects that: partners arrive with their own tents, equipment, and encampment materials, set up a fully realized historical environment, and dismantle cleanly at the end of the weekend.

The practical result: the festival is not dependent on any single venue. If the location changes, the encampment moves with it. Six zones pack out, set up, and operate anywhere the footprint fits: fairgrounds, parks, historic sites, or private land.

3–8 Acres
Total venue footprint: fraction of a traditional cultural fair
No Build-Out
Partners supply their own tents, encampments, and equipment

Inside the Festival

Six Zones. One Mobile Encampment.

Each zone is a self-contained experiential area with dedicated programming, space, and participating organizations.

⚔️

Combat Field

Zone 01

The Combat Field is the most visceral zone at Florida Viking Fest, where Viking Age martial tradition becomes visible, audible, and immediate. Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) practitioners demonstrate the actual fighting systems documented in 15th-century manuals, applied to Viking-era weapons and techniques.

Programming

  • Viking sword and shield demonstrations by HEMA-trained practitioners
  • Shield wall formation battles: live historical re-creation
  • German longsword technique demonstrations (KDF tradition)
  • Axe and spear throwing range (supervised, visitor-participatory)
  • HEMA sparring competitions with judged bouts
  • Visitor-facing introduction workshops (30-min beginner sessions)
🔨

Craft Village

Zone 02

The Craft Village is a working demonstration of Norse-era material culture. Not a display. A practice. Artisans work their crafts in public, explaining techniques, tools, and historical context to visitors who can watch, ask, and in some cases try. The Village is organized as a Norse encampment with period-appropriate presentation.

Programming

  • Live blacksmithing demonstrations: Viking Age iron and metalwork
  • Leatherwork: carving, tooling, and period-accurate construction
  • Textile work: tablet weaving, Norse braiding, natural fiber techniques
  • Woodcarving: Norse knotwork and runic carving demonstrations
  • Visitor hands-on workshops (weaving, stamping, carving)
  • Historical Q&A with encampment participants
🍺

Mead Hall

Zone 03

The Mead Hall is the social center of the Viking Age, and of Florida Viking Fest. Food, drink, music, and communal gathering in an atmosphere that captures the Norse tradition of shared feasting and storytelling. This zone generates significant revenue while creating the festival's most memorable, shareable experience.

Programming

  • Norse-inspired food and drink from curated food vendors
  • Mead and craft beer from regional meaderies and breweries (21+)
  • Live Norse music: historical instruments and contemporary Viking folk
  • Skald performances: Viking-era poetry and oral storytelling
  • Communal long-table seating in period-inspired arrangement
  • Food & Beverage Nonprofit Partner Program: local nonprofits operate booths, retain 20–30% of sales
🎭

Performers

Zone 04

The main performance stage. Norse folk music, skaldic poetry, living mythology, and fire performance: the headlining acts and featured demonstrations that audiences remember years later.

Programming

  • Main stage performances: Norse folk music, Viking metal, historical bands
  • Living mythology: dramatized presentations of the Eddas and sagas
  • Featured combat spectacles: large-scale shield wall demonstrations
  • Fire performances: torch spinning, fire eating, fire sculpture
  • Skald competitions and storytelling performance events
  • Opening and closing ceremonies for each festival day
📚

Learning Longhouse

Zone 05

The Learning Longhouse is what separates Florida Viking Fest from every other Viking-themed event in the state. It is the educational core of the festival: the programming that makes FVF eligible for Florida Humanities Council grants, Title IV-A funds, and school district partnerships unavailable to commercial events.

Year 1 Programming

  • Guided historical presentations: Viking Age archaeology, trade routes, daily life
  • Hands-on workshops: rune carving, Norse textile techniques, iron age craft
  • Homeschool co-op sessions: half-day programming for homeschool families
  • Norse mythology 101: age-appropriate presentations for young visitors
  • Q&A panels with historians and living history practitioners

Year 2 Expansion

  • School Days field trip programming for Lake County public schools
  • Teacher curriculum packets aligned with Florida state standards
  • Student demonstration competitions (Viking Age craft and history)
🏪

Artisans & Vendors

Zone 06

The festival's artisan vendor marketplace: Norse-themed goods, handcrafted merchandise, and historical reproductions. Curated for authenticity: vendors are reviewed for fit with the festival's historical and aesthetic standards.

Vendor Categories

  • Norse jewelry: silver, bronze, amber, reproduction and original designs
  • Historical clothing and kit: Viking Age reproduction garments and accessories
  • Edged weapons and tools: knives, axes, and Norse-style metalwork (display / decorative)
  • Art and illustration: Norse mythology artwork, maps, prints
  • Books and reference: Viking Age history, mythology, and living history resources
  • Photography experience packages: professional Viking portrait sessions

The Strategic Case

Why Viking. Why Now. Why Here.

Grant-Eligible
Nonprofit status unlocks Florida Humanities Council, Title IV-A, and county TDC grants unavailable to any commercial operator.
No Competition
The closest comparable, the Florida Viking Festival in Valrico, closed in 2025. Central Florida has no equivalent event.
Portable Format
3–8 acres, not the 10–30+ a Renaissance faire needs. No fixed venue dependency.
Ready Audience
A large, established living history community with no dedicated regional festival. FVF is built to serve it.

Why EFLC

The Right Operator for This Event

No commercial promoter could walk into Lake County and replicate what the Education Foundation already has: 40 years of community trust, existing relationships with Lake County Schools, a 501(c)(3) that unlocks grant funding, and proven large-scale event production experience. That combination, in one organization, is why FVF is proposed to EFLC and no one else.

The Foundation's event production track record means vendor management, permitting, logistics, and sponsor coordination are not learning curves. They're established capabilities. Florida Viking Fest is built on that foundation.

2027 marks the Foundation's 40th anniversary. FVF is proposed as a landmark event for that milestone year: a new annual fundraising pillar that serves the educational mission, not a distraction from it.

Who This Is For

Viking History Is for Everyone

Florida Viking Fest is explicitly and intentionally an inclusive event. Viking Age culture is documented history, built from archaeology, literature, and material culture, that belongs to everyone with curiosity about the past.

We are not affiliated with, nor do we welcome association with, Norse nationalist movements or any ideology that misappropriates Viking imagery for exclusionary purposes. The runes, the ships, the warriors, the craftspeople of the Viking Age were part of a diverse, trade-connected world. Our festival reflects that reality.

This is a Florida event. Built for Lake County. Open to everyone.

Mission

"To create Central Florida's Viking cultural festival: a living history experience rooted in education, built around community, and designed to last."
